Overview

When I joined, CoreHealth had a strong product, CoreHealth Pro, used by large enterprises to run workplace wellness programs. It was extremely flexible: every client could tailor challenges, reports, and learning paths to their needs. But this very strength was also its weakness - implementations dragged on for months, engagement was uneven, and admins struggled to prove value.

We needed something different: a turnkey product that could launch in under a week, deliver immediate value to employees, and scale to thousands of clients without drowning the team in customization. That became CoreHealth NOW.

Challenge

Challenge

Challenge

The central challenge wasn’t just design - it was a philosophical shift.

  • For the business: Move away from saying “yes” to every bespoke client request and instead offer opinionated defaults. This meant managing internal fear that we would alienate existing clients.

  • For admins: Make the product useful right away. Many admins said things like, “We spend more time configuring than running the program.” We needed to flip that dynamic.

  • For employees: Make wellness engaging, not overwhelming. In user testing, employees described their first logins as “cluttered” and “confusing.”

In short: we had to prove that simplicity could drive better results than flexibility.

Approach

Approach

Approach

I approached this as both a design problem and a behavioral problem.

  • Finding the core jobs to be done: We mapped the wellness journey: employees join a challenge → track progress → see results → feel rewarded. Everything else was noise.

  • Designing for motivation: We brought in progress maps, leaderboards, and reward ladders to make every action feel like a step forward. Copy and empty states guided users instead of leaving them lost.

  • Standardizing the experience: Default challenge packs, structured learning modules, and simplified HRA reports became the baseline. Instead of asking admins to design wellness from scratch, they could now press “Go.”

  • Building scalability into the system: We created a shared design system that aligned CoreHealth Pro and CoreHealth NOW. This let us deliver consistent UI while still leaving space for lightweight client branding and toggles.

Though CoreHealth NOW was still rolling out at the time, the shift in outcomes was already visible.

  1. Time-to-Value Transformation

    • From multi-month implementations to turnkey launch in under a month.

    • Zero setup fees, dramatically lowering the barrier for adoption.

  2. Engagement & Participation Signals

    • Default challenge packs showed higher join rates compared to custom-configured programs.

    • Early testing showed day-7 participation and completion lift increasing when progress bars and leaderboards were introduced.

This project taught me one of my most important lessons as a designer: sometimes giving less choice delivers more value.

  • For the business: Turnkey design created a new product narrative. Instead of being the platform that could “do anything,” CoreHealth NOW became the platform that “just works.”

  • For admins: It lifted the burden of configuration. They could finally spend time motivating employees instead of building programs.

  • For employees: It created a sense of clarity, motivation, and momentum — key drivers of long-term behavior change.

In reflection, the boldest design move wasn’t a flashy new UI. It was saying no to complexity. We replaced the promise of “infinite customization” with the confidence of smart defaults — and in doing so, unlocked scale, speed, and stronger engagement.
